US Honors Biology Class Meets with Snail Scientist
Matt Lubicky’s Upper School Honors Biology class had a special guest this week. Bruce Stephen joined the class through Zoom to discuss his career, education, scientific research process, and an experiment that Bruce created and the students recently completed. The experiment tests snail egg viability in various pH environments to learn about the larger implications of aqueous environments becoming more acidic because of human-produced CO2 emissions.
Bruce is an adjunct professor at Unity College in Maine, a published author, a teacher of Oceanography at Acadia Institute of Oceanography, and has been an invaluable resource to the class while learning about experimental design. He has a B.S. in biology from SUNY College at Cortland, a M.S. in biology/marine biology from the University of Massachusetts, and a Ph.D. in applied ecology from the University of Nebraska.
