Senior Project Highlight Series: Shay O’Connor ’23
Interested in a career in education, Shay O’Connor ’23 spent his Senior Project in the classroom at Haddonfield Friends School, a PK-8 Quaker school. Throughout the month, he spent much of his time with Teacher Brooke in a third grade class, but as Shay noted, “no two days looked the same.” He quickly learned that flexibility is key for both students and teachers, despite having a general structure or schedule that was intended to be followed. Each day began with journal writing, and for Shay, assisting individual students with their writing. This was typically followed by a class book read-aloud and then a snack before sending students to special-area classes. During that time, Teacher Brooke and Shay would prepare activities and discuss her experiences as an educator. The afternoon then included lunch and recess, followed by science, math, and a class activity.
When reflecting on the four-week Senior Project, Shay said, “I started my project as a floater, but worked my way up towards leading small groups and, eventually, full lessons and activities. Teacher Brooke walked me through the lesson-planning process. As I led activities, I constantly thought about how I could clearly and effectively communicate the lesson objectives to the students. Overall, my project deepened my interest in a career in education. It also allowed me to form meaningful connections with the students, and I am grateful for their willingness to immediately accept me as a member of their classroom community.”
During the month of May, seniors engage in off-campus pre-professional or service projects. These projects provide opportunities to explore interests that may lead to a career. Students gain hands-on experience and self-knowledge, which serves as a gentle transition from classes to the professional world. Enjoy a peak into a few of this year’s Senior Projects.
