Philadelphia Museum of Art Prekindergarten Program
On February 28, Prekindergarten Teachers Paige Bloom and Lisa Martin led their students on a field trip to study abstract art with the Philadelphia Museum of Art Prekindergarten program. The Philadelphia Museum of Art Prekindergarten Program, designed to introduce students to the Museum and art concepts, included a modern art tour and an abstract collage art project.
Philadelphia Museum of Art Prekindergarten Program Explores Abstract Art Concepts
In advance of the trip, the prekindergarten classes read the book The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds that depicted the journey of how a young girl named Vashti discovers her creative abilities by beginning to draw with just one little dot. The book related to the exhibition the students studied at the Museum, as the featured artist, Wassily Kandinsky, was famous for layering dots on top of one another and color-mixing. The students explored the ideas that “a line is a dot that went for a walk!” and how blending two colors can create a new color.
Students Find Inspiration for Collage Art Projects
The prekindergarteners then observed big canvases with paint and other mediums such as wood, wire, and metal. The students had a chance to use different textures to create a mixed medium collage together. Then each prekindergartener made his/her own dot collage in the studio, inspired by Vashti and The Dot.
