MFS Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month
In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Upper School MLK, Jr. Club President Cassie Dominguez ’23 and Hispanic/Latinx Affinity Group Leader, Janeyli Rosario ’23, along with members of the group, led a number of gatherings for students to learn about the cultures and traditions that make up the diverse Hispanic and Latino American communities.
First, the Middle and Upper School students participated in assemblies highlighting the art of dance in Hispanic and Latino culture. Darlin Garcia – an energetic dancer, performer, and instructor who has gained recognition as one of the top male salsa dancers in the Philadelphia/SJ area – from Art in Motion Dance & Fitness joined the students to teach them dances, including salsa, merengue, cumbia, and more. The following week, Upper School students were invited to a Hispanic Heritage Hangout which included delicious foods from many Hispanic cultures as well as another visit from Darlin Garcia for additional salsa dancing fun. All proceeds from the food sales at the hangout were donated to Fundación Sin Límites.
In addition to the gatherings, the group created a bulletin board in the Upper School hallway that featured information about Hispanic Heritage Month, answers to questions from the group members about their favorite traditions, celebrations, and the countries that are most dear to them, and Lotería cards which were then used by teachers in vocabulary lessons in Spanish classes.
