Celebrating Black History Month: Honoring Legacies, Inspiring Futures
Students, faculty, and staff participated in a wide range of activities throughout February in celebration of Black History Month.
Lower School students learned and practiced empathy and explored equality in preparation for a special Meeting for Worship that celebrated the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. Coding classes students used these themes to create messages of empathy and equality that they think are important to share with our MFS community. Fourth graders recently completed a Civil Rights unit in their social studies classes.
The Middle School Diversity Club sponsored a bulletin board highlighting the ABC’s of African American and the Arts featuring inspirational figures from history and today whose work demonstrates Black excellence in the arts including painting, dance, music, sculpture, photography, film, and more.
Upper School students gathered for an assembly presentation focusing on Young Leaders of the Civil Right Movement with guests from the Key Art Production. Students had the ability to learn about pivotal moments in history in addition to learning about the trajectory of lifelong advocates such as Ruby Bridges and John Lewis. The artists used music and archival footage to explore the courageous acts of young people to create a more just and equitable society. Members of the Black Student Union also held a t-shirt fundraiser for the community.
